SPT ry: Webinar on “Evolution of China’s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Policy: Reasons and Consequences”, 9.4.2025 klo 16-17
(EN) 9.5.2025 at 15-16: Webinar on “Evolution of China’s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Policy: Reasons and Consequences”
This webinar will explore the dramatic shift in China’s nuclear non-proliferation policy, from its early Cold War stance of supporting the spread of nuclear weapons among communist allies to its current positioning as a proponent of disarmament and global restraint. The talk will also reflect on China’s recent contributions in the field, including support for a groundbreaking UN initiative: a two-year study on the consequences of nuclear war, voted for by 144 states, with China as the only nuclear-weapons state in favor. The webinar will examine the political, strategic, and ideological reasons behind this transformation and discuss future implications: Can China position itself as a norm-setter in nuclear policy? How should international actors interpret its evolving doctrine?
The webinar will be presented by Martyna Szoja, PhD researcher at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany.
