On the fifth of June, participants of the Summer Meeting were greeted by ideal conditions: Occasional sunshine, good company, and a culture-rich program. The journey began in front of the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, and participants were already aboard the bus well before 2 PM. A cheerful and expectant atmosphere prevailed as departure approached.
Due to practical considerations, meeting topics were discussed en route. The key agenda items included:
- Acceptance of new members: nine young members and seven regular members were welcomed into the society.
- Organizational development: Finnish Society of Chemical Engineers (KTY) will now continue its operations as a division of the Finnish Chemical Society (SKS). A revised KTY-SKS membership fee will allow participation in all SKS events.
- Kemia Magazine transition: Changes are forthcoming; a search is underway for a new publishing partner, as the current agreement will conclude at the end of 2025.
Exploring Finnish Cultural Roots by Tuusulanjärvi
Following the meeting, our guide Pekka Kärkkäinen led a cultural-historical tour that brought to life the unique artist community around Tuusulanjärvi:
- Ainola, the cherished home of composer Jean Sibelius
- Halosenniemi, the striking atelier-residence of painter Pekka Halonen
- Aleksis Kivi’s death cabin, a place whose story continues to resonate
The lakeside artist colony has played a pivotal role in shaping Finnish identity. Figures such as Juhani Aho, Venny Soldan-Brofeldt, Eero Järnefelt, and Jean Sibelius conveyed through words, music, and imagery what politics alone could not express: the profound essence of national character.
Dinner at Mankeli – A Delicious Finale
The day culminated in a shared dinner at the charming Mankeli restaurant in the Krabi courtyard. The food earned well-deserved praise, and the cheerful hum of conversation around the tables provided a perfect ending to this summer day.
Warm thanks to all participants – the Summer Meeting was a reminder of the enduring value of shared experience, mutual understanding, and the honoring of culture.
